The checklist

Biggest problems first.

  • Fix

    Specific, not generic

Claims every competitor makes: "AI-powered", "all-in-one", "innovative", "solution".

Fix: Say what the AI does for the buyer, e.g. "drafts the weekly report for you".

  • Fix

Talks about the visitor, not the company

    "You/your" once, "we/our/us" 4 times.

Fix: Rewrite sentences about the company as what the visitor gets.

  • Fix

    A search description

No meta description, so search engines and AI tools guess one.

Fix: Write a 140–160 character description of what you offer and for whom.

  • Improve

The next step says what happens

Buttons like "Learn more" don't say what happens next.

Fix: Name the outcome: "Get my free audit" beats "Submit".

  • Improve

    Not too many choices

5 buttons or links in the opening screen.

Fix: Keep one main button and at most one secondary option.

  • Improve

    Proof near the top

No numbers, customer names or ratings near the headline.

Fix: Add one piece of proof under the headline: a result, a customer count or a well-known customer.

  • Good

    One clear headline

"The all-in-one, AI-powered platform to transform your operations"

  • Good

Headline short enough to read at a glance

    10 words.

  • Good

A next step on the opening screen

    Buttons/links: "Learn more", "Contact us".

  • Good

    Opening screen is brief

    31 words around the headline.

  • Good

    Short, readable sentences

    Sentences average 11 words.

  • Good

    Set up for phones

    Has a mobile viewport tag.

How it works

How the Homepage Clarity Check works

  1. 01

    Enter your homepage

Type your domain. No sign-up and no email.

  2. 02

    We find your opening screen

The checker reads your homepage like a browser and finds the main headline and the block around it, leaving out the menu.

  3. 03

    Read your score

A 0–100 clarity score from 12 checks: headline, specificity, visitor-focused language, next step, choices, proof, length, readability, search description and phone setup.

  4. 04

    See the five-second read

Where available, an AI reads only your opening screen, as a stranger would, and says what you offer, who it's for, why you and what to do next, then suggests a clearer headline.

  5. 05

    Fix the biggest gaps

Problems are listed first, each with a specific fix.

Questions

Questions about the Homepage Clarity Check

What it does, what it costs, and how far to trust the result.

01What is a homepage clarity check?

A free review of your homepage's opening screen that tells you whether a first-time visitor can quickly understand what you offer, who it's for, why to choose you and what to do next.

02What is the five-second test?

Show your page to someone for five seconds, then ask what they remember. StoryBrand's version, the "grunt test", asks whether they can say what you offer, how it makes their life better and what to do to buy it.

03How long do visitors take to decide whether to stay?

About ten seconds. Nielsen Norman Group's analysis of Microsoft Research data found the first 10 seconds of a visit decide whether people stay, so you need to make your value clear within them.

04What does the checklist look at?

One clear headline of 4–12 words, specific rather than generic claims, more 'you' than 'we', a next step near the headline that says what happens, no more than about three choices, proof near the top, a brief opening screen, short sentences, a search description and a mobile viewport tag.

05Does the checklist use AI?

No. The 12 checks read your page's text and structure directly. The optional five-second read uses AI; if it isn't available, the checklist is still complete.

06Is the homepage clarity check free?

Yes, completely free, with no sign-up and no email. Nothing about your site is stored.
