What llms.txt does, and doesn't

  • It does: give AI agents and coding assistants a clean map of your key pages. Anthropic, Stripe and Cloudflare publish one.
  • It doesn't: rank you in Google or AI answers. Google says no AI system uses it today, and server logs show AI crawlers rarely request it.
  • So: it's ten minutes of tidy insurance. Getting cited depends on being crawlable and clearly positioned.
How it works

How the llms.txt Generator works

  1. 01

    Enter your website

Type your domain. No sign-up and no email.

  2. 02

    We find your pages

Your sitemap is read (including sitemap indexes); if there isn't one, your homepage links are used.

  3. 03

    We build the file

Pages are grouped into sections (main pages, company, docs, customers, blog, optional) using each page's own title and description. Legal pages go to Optional.

  4. 04

    Edit and check

Edit the file in the browser. It's checked against the llmstxt.org spec as you type, and any llms.txt you already have is checked too.

  5. 05

    Publish it

Copy or download the file and upload it to your site's root, so it opens at yourdomain.com/llms.txt.

Questions

Questions about the llms.txt Generator

What it does, what it costs, and how far to trust the result.

01What is llms.txt?

A Markdown file at yourdomain.com/llms.txt that gives AI tools a short map of your site: a heading with your name, a one-line summary, then sections listing your key pages with a description of each. It was proposed by Jeremy Howard at llmstxt.org.

02Does llms.txt help me rank in ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews?

There's no evidence it does. Google says no AI system currently uses it and that sites don't need it to appear in Search or AI features, and server-log studies show AI crawlers rarely request it. It's useful for AI agents and coding assistants working with your site, and it's quick to add.

03What's the correct llms.txt format?

An H1 with your site name (the only required part), then an optional blockquote summary, optional notes, and ## sections whose items are links: "- [Page name](https://url): description". A section called "## Optional" holds secondary links an AI can skip.

04Where do I put the llms.txt file?

At the root of your site, so it opens at yourdomain.com/llms.txt. A file can also sit in a subfolder, such as /docs/llms.txt, to cover just that part of the site.

05Is the llms.txt generator free?

Yes, completely free, with no sign-up and no email. Nothing about your site is stored.

06Does it use AI to write the file?

No. Every link name and description comes from your own pages' titles and meta descriptions, so nothing is invented. You can edit any line before you publish.
