How it works

How the SEO ROI Calculator works

  1. 01

    Add what SEO costs

Your monthly SEO cost (agency, writers, tools and staff time) and the number of months to judge it over.

  2. 02

    Add the traffic you expect

The extra organic visitors a month you expect by the end. The calculator assumes it grows steadily from zero, because SEO builds slowly.

  3. 03

Add what a visitor is worth

The share of visitors who buy, what a customer is worth, and your margin.

  4. 04

    Read your result

Extra customers, profit after SEO costs, and your return over the period.

  5. 05

    See when it pays back

The month total profit passes total cost, and the traffic you need each month to cover the monthly cost.

Questions

Questions about the SEO ROI Calculator

What it does, what it costs, and how far to trust the result.

01How do I calculate SEO ROI?

SEO return = (profit from organic customers − SEO cost) ÷ SEO cost. Profit from organic customers = extra visitors × the share who buy × customer value × margin. At $3,000 a month for 12 months, growing to 5,000 extra visitors a month, 1% buying, $500 customers and 70% margin: 325 customers, $113,750 profit on $36,000 of cost, a 216% return.

02How long does SEO take to pay back?

It depends on how fast traffic builds and what a visitor is worth. In the example above, total profit passes total cost in month 4. Because traffic is assumed to grow from zero, early months always lose money.

03Why does the calculator assume traffic grows steadily?

New pages and links take months to rank, so traffic rarely arrives all at once. A straight-line ramp from zero to your target is a simple, cautious stand-in. Real traffic often grows faster later.

04Should customer value be one order or lifetime value?

Use one order if most customers buy once. Use lifetime value if they come back or subscribe: it's what an organic customer is really worth, and it's why SEO often looks better over longer periods.

05Does it count traffic from AI assistants?

Yes, if you include it in the extra visitors. Visits from ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews that cite your pages are part of organic search now; track them separately in your analytics to see their share.

06Is the SEO ROI calculator free?

Yes, completely free, with no sign-up and no email. It runs in your browser and nothing you enter is sent anywhere.
