Questions

Questions about the Month-on-Month Growth Calculator

What it does, what it costs, and how far to trust the result.

01How do I calculate month-on-month growth?

For one month: (this month − last month) ÷ last month. Over several months, use the compound monthly growth rate: (value now ÷ starting value) to the power of 1 ÷ months, minus 1. Going from 20,000 to 35,000 in 6 months is 9.8% a month.

02Why not just average the monthly growth?

Because each month grows on the one before. 75% growth over 6 months averages 12.5% a month, but 12.5% compounded for 6 months gives 103%, not 75%. The compound rate, 9.8%, is the one that actually gets you from start to finish.

03How do I turn monthly growth into yearly growth?

Yearly growth = (1 + monthly rate) to the power of 12, minus 1. 9.8% a month is about 206% a year, roughly tripling.

04What is a good month-on-month growth rate?

It depends on stage and size. For very early startups, Paul Graham's essay Startup = Growth suggests 5–7% a week during Y Combinator is good. Rates usually fall as the business grows, so compare yourself with your own past months as well.

05How long will it take to double?

Doubling time = ln 2 ÷ ln(1 + monthly rate). At 9.8% a month that's about 7.4 months. At 5% a month it's about 14 months.

06Is the month-on-month growth calculator free?

Yes, completely free, with no sign-up and no email. It runs in your browser and nothing you enter is sent anywhere.
